Hau Wong Festival in Tung Chung

TUNG CHUNG RURAL AREA

Date: the 17th to 20th day of the 8th month of the lunar year

Hau Wong Festival in Tung Chung is an important traditional event held annually. It is organised by the Tung Chung Rural Committee and the Tung Chung Drama Organising Committee.

The festival incorporates traditional cultural customs, including welcoming, worshipping, and sending off deities, which demonstrate local beliefs and community cohesion. On the day of inviting deities, Hau Wong would be invited to visit the shrine, and sacred objects are auctioned. On the day of worship, there would be fa pau (paper floral tributes) associations bidding and Cantonese opera. On the day of sending off deities, prayers for blessings are offered, and the statue of Hau Wong is returned to the temple for worship. The whole festival showcases both religious culture and active community involvement.
