Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade

TAI O

Date: the 5th Lunar Month

Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade is a traditional sacrificial festival in Tai O with over 100 years of history, and it has been included on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Projects List in 2011. It is being held by Hong Kong Tai O Traditional Dragon Boat Association every year: In the early morning of 4th day of the fifth Lunar Month, dragon boats would go to the temples to “welcome the gods”, bring back the idols of Yeung Hau, Tin Hau, Kwan Tai and Hung Shing for making offerings; on Lunar May 5th, the dragon boats would “welcome the gods” and parade along the waterways, and finally bringing the idols back to the temples (seeing off the gods). The rituals are meaningful and reflect the fisheries-based history and cultural heritage of Tai O.
