Hung Shing Temple, Mui Wo
Ngan Shek Street, Mui Wo, Lantau Island
Located in Mui Wo, Lantau Island, the Hung Shing Temple is a sea deity temple built by local residents to pray for favourable weather and calm seas, and is dedicated to the southern water god honoured as ‘Hung Shing Tai Wong’. It is said that in the past, flooding of the sea repeatedly damaged crop yields, so villagers built the temple by the shore to seek blessings. The temple was renovated in 1843, indicating that it has a history of over a hundred years and has witnessed Mui Wo’s transformation from a fishing and farming settlement into today’s community.
