Tung Chung Battery and Fu Tei Wan Lime Kiln
Tung Chung Road North, Tung Chung, Lantau
The Tung Chung Battery is located on a small hill near the Ma Wan Chung Pier and was declared a monument in 1983. The battery’s remains comprise two L-shaped enclosure walls, with a platform at the corner that probably served as a gun emplacement. Given their proximity to the two Rocky Lion Hill Batteries documented in “The Gazetteer of Guangdong”, they are believed to be part of one of those batteries, and hence is now known as the Tung Chung Battery.
The Fu Tei Wan Lime Kiln was originally discovered at Fu Tei Wan in Chek Lap Kok, and is one of the better-preserved ancient kilns in Hong Kong. In 1991, it was relocated to its present location for conservation and display to make way for the new airport construction. Visitors can view the ancient kiln up close and gain deeper insight into Hong Kong’s early lime production and trade activities.
