Tian Tan Buddha Statue
Ngong Ping, Lantau Island
Sitting atop the peak of Mount Muk Yue in front of the Po Lin Monastery, the Tian Tan Buddha statue was constructed by the Nanjing Chenguang Machinery Plant of the China Astronautics Science and Technology Consultant Corporation in 1986. It is the world’s largest outdoor bronze seated Buddha statue. Cast with 250 tonnes of bronze, the statue’s body is 26.4 metres tall and 34 metres in total measuring from the lotus throne and the base. The base of the Tian Tan Buddha statue is a three-level granite structure, which imitated the pedestal of Tian Tan (Temple of Heaven) in Beijing, hence the title of the statue “Tian Tan Buddha”.
