Wisdom Path
Ngong Ping, Lantau Island
In 2002, Professor JAO Tsung-i, a renowned sinologist, completed the calligraphy of the “Prajna Paramita Hrdaya Sutra” (“Heart Sutra”) and dedicated it to the people of Hong Kong in June of the same year. The masterpiece is displayed in the form of a large-scale outdoor wood inscription on a slope at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island. Named the “Wisdom Path” in English, the Chinese name of the display, literally meaning “the ‘Heart Sutra’ written on bamboo tiles”, derives from its unique design resembling bamboo tiles (zhujian) used for writing in ancient times. The calligraphy is carved onto 38 timber columns arranged in a figure-of-eight configuration (i.e. the symbol of infinity “∞”) symbolising infinity. The column at the highest point of the slope is intentionally left blank to embody the concept of “emptiness” (Sunyata), a key theme in the “Heart Sutra”. The “Wisdom Path” is a must-visit cultural attraction for calligraphy enthusiasts, Buddhists, and visitors seeking moments of spiritual tranquility.
*** The “Wisdom Path” is temporarily closed from 5 June 2025 for refurbishment works. For details, please visit the relevant website.***
